Rights Readers might be interested in The Blessing Next to the Wound: A Story of Art, Activism and Transformation (published this month by Lantern Books) especially as many Pasadena folks probably know Hector Aristizabal, my co-author or have seen our play, Nightwind about his arrest and torture by the US-supported military in Colombia. The book tells that story along with his years coming of age in Medellin, Colombia where he survived poverty, civil war, and the violence unleashed by the cocaine cartel. In exile in the US, he transcended his desire for revenge and channeled it, instead, into constructive action for social justice--creatively challenging US policy, the juvenile in/justice system, barriers facing immigrants, and more. Hector is on the road much of the year, but if you do decide to read the book, with a bit of schedule juggling, I expect he can join you at Vroman's if you'd like.
